Eprocurement in Wales is still in its infancy and firms must do more to develop their strategies in this area if they want to keep up with their competitors in the rest of the UK.
This is the conclusion of a new report by Opportunity Wales and Cardiff University, which shows that although more Welsh businesses have an online presence than ever before, many are still not embracing the benefits of eprocurement, the Western Mail reports.
It says businesses which sell their products and services online see increased sales and customer numbers and are better able to target potential buyers. However, just 11.1 per cent of firms in Wales have an eprocurement strategy.
Professor Paul Beynon-Davies, director of the eCommerce Innovation Centre at Cardiff University, said there is evidence of the increased use of ICT in businesses across Wales.
However, he told the Western Mail: "Aspects of business to business ecommerce, particularly eprocurement, is still in its infancy amongst the SME population."
Sue Essex, the Welsh finance and public services minister, believes eprocurement is key in efficient service delivery.
"Smarter procurement is essential in our drive to improve front line public services," PublicTechnology.net quotes her as saying.
