The US Navy has awarded its contract for work on the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier to Northrop Grumman.
In a $20.6 million (£10.3 million) deal, the company will provide the planning and execution of maintenance for the nuclear-powered vehicle through its Newport News sector.
This will see the division involved with the craft until its activation in 2013.
Ken Mahler, vice president of aircraft carrier overhaul program for the company, has commented on the importance and gravity of the transaction.
"The work authorized by this contract will help ensure the USS Enterprise is thoughtfully maintained and remains operationally ready to serve the nation's needs throughout the next several years," he said.
Meanwhile, the US Navy has also awarded a $16 million naval sea systems command contract to Raytheon.
As a result, the firm will install ships with the second version of its Ship Self Defence System.
