The procurement process for biobased products in the US is to be updated and made easier, the acting secretary of agriculture said this week.
Chuck Conner explained that the US department of agriculture (Usda) will clarify the preference structure, simplifying participation for procurement officials and manufacturers.
He also said it will help to increase the demand for such products, create employment opportunities in rural areas and reduce federal dependence on non-renewable petroleum.
"This is part of the federal government's focus on using renewable, sustainable resources," he added.
Usda will be responsible for updating the federal acquisition regulations (FAR), which outline policies and guidelines for contractors and officials in the procurement sector.
According to Usda, which incorporates national issues such as food, nutrition and natural resources, the FAR are the most important notes on this subject in the sector.
