The automotive and industrial manufacturing industry is to enjoy a greater deployment of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, according to new reports.
Recent studies by business research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan have shown that the production and logistics of these sectors in the US have increased their focus and spending on the new technology, which is aimed at streamlining supply chains.
Greater use of RFID could ensure demand and supply balance within each sector is improved, the research claims.
Frost and Sullivan research analyst Priyanka Gouthaman said: "RFID has remarkable potential to integrate these supply chain and enterprise resource planning systems with manufacturing applications.
"It enables tracking and identification of inventory work-in-progress critical assets, spares, tools and high-value components, thereby providing real-time operational visibility across the length of the value chain."
Supply chain management is increasingly concerned with cutting costs and process times, meaning improved technologies such as RFID and e-procurement systems are essential.
Online procurement and purchasing software can dramatically speed up a firm's operations, especially coupled with a streamlined production process which has RFID tags already integrated.
