The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) is to distribute almost 50 heavy transport vehicles throughout the country as part of a £200 million investment programme.
The heavy duty lorries, known as prime movers, will be used to assist the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS), said fire minister Parmjit Dhanda, who is also the MP for Gloucester.
Each vehicle is able to carry specialist equipment to the sites of major incidents and the DCLG aims to improve the speed and flexibility of this service across the FRS.
Terry Standng of the Chief Fire Officers' Association added that the prime movers were "significant additions" and would enable the FRS to deal with larger-scale events such as flooding and building collapses more effectively.
"We very much welcome this additional Communities and Local Government-funded investment which further reinforces the success of the partnership between central and local government in this important area of our work," he remarked.
