Discussions over the potential for the government to procure goods directly from Northern Irish farmers have been welcomed by the Ulster Farmers Union (UFU), according to reports. Given the many millions of pounds spent by public institutions across Northern Ireland on food each year, the union is keen to see government officials commit to establishing localised procurement links. The UFU has welcomed the latest developments brought on by dialogue between local farmers and the government and is convinced that its procurement proposals would have a positive impact in the wider economy of the province. UFU Chief Executive Clarke Black said: "We want the government to be bold and include this [plan for local procurement] in the finalised programme for government. "All the detail won't be resolved by the end of the current consultation, but we want government to be ambitious and put local business first." The UFU recently called for supermarket codes of practice to be strengthened in order to give a greater degree of balance within the food supply chain in the UK.
