Ghana should embrace modern and sustainable procurement practices, the chief executive officer of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) has said.
Speaking at a forum organised by the PPA, Agyenim Boateng Adjei said procurement for the sake of instant economic advantages needs to be replaced by procurement systems that have lasting benefits.
As well as securing long-term social and economic advantages, minimising damage to the environment and ethical purchasing are also priorities, he said according to a report in the Statesman.
"When products are purchased from companies that are ethically irresponsible...they are being encouraged to continue with their bad practices," he explained.
Exploitation of workers and the degradation of the environment are two examples of unethical company behaviour that must not be encouraged, he said.
The notion of sustainable procurement was originally floated at the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002.
