The government has struck a new procurement deal that will see at least one ship a year built for the next 15 years, a report claims.
According to an article in the Times, the government has made the procurement decision after rival shipbuilders BAE Systems and the VT group agreed to merge their facilities in Portsmouth and Glasgow.
The new joint venture will have assets totalling approximately £1 billion and will be chaired by Sir John Parker.
Commenting on the procurement decision, a senior defence industry source involved in the talks said that "the carriers are a big contract but the really important thing was the terms of the business agreement".
In other procurement news, it was revealed earlier this month that the European parliament has agreed to adopt a revamped version of its energy-performance programme.
The decision means that EU states must consider the energy-efficiency rating of office equipment before deciding whether or not to purchase.
