Southern Universities Purchasing Consortium (SUPC) is thought to be playing a leading role in driving collaboration and efficiency gains around eprocurement spending.
The claim was made after EGS announced that seven universities have signed up for its Parablilis electronic trading environment for the higher education sector.
Intending to have 30 institutions signed up to the Parabilis Exchange by 2012, the SUPC contracted EGS in December 2006 to develop and manage the Parabilis technology.
SUPC regional purchasing coordinator Susan Wright said the financial savings and operational benefits of Parbilis are "tremendous".
She said buyers in the UK public sector raise over 50 million purchase orders and supplies post over 100 million invoices per year.
As a result, Ms Wright said SUPC "we wanted to increase the usage and accessibility of collaborate contracts, reduce contract leakage, streamline procurement process, increase our purchasing leverage and gain a better understanding of consortium expenditure".
The SUPC was formed in 1974 with the aims of ensuring the pooling of information on prices and discounts, the coordination of suppliers to devise arrangements to secure the advantages of group purchasing and the ability to negotiate special discounts on a group basis listed among its main objectives.
