Rolls-Royce is gearing up for a radio frequency identification (RIFD) trial that will tag any goods it sends to its customers, Computer Weekly reports.
The move comes after the US Department of Defence demanded that by 2007 all of its suppliers would have to tag any containers and cases that move thought its supply chain using RFID technology.
The trial will begin in Bristol this month where RFID supply chain management software will tag goods moving through Rolls-Royce's warehouse.
However, having identified several benefits of using RFID technology to track goods, the engineering company plans to use it more widely across its UK warehouses over the next year.
Indeed, according to a recent report by Frost & Sullivan, RFID technology can boost productivity in manufacturing and engineering significantly.
It claims that the rising need to accurately track products through supply chains is creating significant scope for the use of RFID supply management systems across a variety of industrial sectors.
Lee Doherty, Rolls-Royce's head of supply chain services, told Computer Weekly: "We can drive down payment times by linking RFID to invoicing. Our operational command centres will get visibility of things that are not moving on time or in the way that they should."
