A newly-published report from the Aberdeen Group has emphasised the benefits that businesses around the world can leverage through the effective implementation of eprocurement practices.
The report found that significant savings had been made by companies that implemented eprocurement strategies since 2001 and in many cases transaction cycles had been halved through these techniques.
But the Aberdeen Group's research, which incorporated more than 600 businesses from around the world, concluded that there are a number of challenges still to be overcome for eprocurement in terms of end-user adoption and supplier enablement.
"The procurement department is no longer just a transaction centre for placing orders, but can also be a source of competitive advantage by acting as an information hub supporting business planning and decision making," said Amit Gupta, research analyst at the Aberdeen Group.
"There is more to an eprocurement solution than cost savings - it is now a tool that removes manual error-prone repetitive tasks and promotes compliance with business controls allowing procurement resources to focus on more strategic tasks."
In related news, an eprocurement solution contract has recently been agreed between the South Tyneside council and UK-based EGS company.
