Shortages of talented staff among procurement departments across Europe means the focus of the sector should be on identifying and recruiting the best people available, it has been suggested.
Sammy Rashed, who heads global sourcing at pharmaceuticals giant Novartis, is convinced that finding the right employees is among the greatest challenges facing the procurement industry.
Mr Rashed told the ELP'07 Forum in Nice recently that more needs to be done by the industry to identify and retain talented people who can help sustain sourcing-focused businesses, reports the European Leaders Network.
"Whether it's getting more students to major in sourcing at university, or someone involved in another area of the business who sees sourcing as a stepping stone to a more rapid promotion, procurement needs to ensure the developmental opportunities for ambitious employees to fulfill their potential," said Mr Rashed, according to the publication.
Headquartered in Switzerland, Novartis employs close to 100,000 people and operates in around 140 countries worldwide.
