The government is to provide the rail freights sector with a £44 million grant in an effort to keep goods transport off the road, it has been announced.
According to the Environmental Transport Association, rail minister Tom Harris announced that the procurement deal will reduce carbon emissions, as well as road accidents and congestion.
The three-year agreement will cut the amount of journeys taken by trucks by 2.1 million and save 631 million kilometres through its duration, it added.
"Our aim is to secure a major shift of goods from road onto rail," the official said.
"There is funding available and I would like to encourage the industry to get involved and make best use of it."
Meanwhile, the airline industry has announced at its annual meeting that it will cut carbon emissions, according to the Brunei times.
By 2050, the world's leading air companies will aim to be greener and emit no carbon dioxide.
