US government agency Nasa has awarded a contract for the design and build of a testing facility, it emerged this week.
Worth some $51.4 million (£25.98 million), the procurement is aimed at specifically addressing the acoustic and vibration capabilities which could support the next Orion mission to the International Space Station and the moon.
Benham Constructors has been commissioned to fulfil the contract, which involves providing all materials and manpower for the creation of the testing facility.
The project will also include the creation of a high-speed data acquisition system and mechanical vibration capabilities, Nasa announced in a statement.
It is hoped that the tests will prove Orion's performance ability by simulating various launch, orbit and re-entry conditions.
Orion's first manned flight into orbit is scheduled for 2014, with future plans for a mission to Mars set to begin in 2020.
