Environmentally friendly sourcing strategies could benefit from the application of basic procurement managing principles, it has been claimed.
In an interview on BusinessGreen blog, Mike Arenth, vice president of Europe, the Middle East and Africa at spend management company Ariba, claimed that green sourcing is on the agenda of every business.
Mr Arenth added that recent Ariba research found that sustainable procurement was a high-ranking priority for 300 chief procurement officers, but the implantation of the matter was where companies often fell short.
But the expert added that monitoring supplier performance from an environmental standpoint may provide a solution.
"By requesting environmental information you are asking your suppliers to become more accountable and then you can put that information into a balance scorecard and measure their performance, creating an incentive for them to improve," he said.
On its website, Ariba states that it has six Fortune 100 companies as clients.
