Female entrepreneurs have been promised better access to large procurement contracts by a scheme that is based on a similar initiative in the US.
The Women in Enterprise Connecting to Contracts (WEConnect) scheme was launched in the House of Commons this week as the British answer to a programme in which American business women are in contact with the likes of Pfizer and Microsoft.
It aims to put female entrepreneurs in touch with multinational companies in order to address the fact that female business owners are awarded only three to five per cent of corporate and public sector deals.
Marianne Schoenig, from Accenture UK, said: "To provide high performance to our clients, we depend on flexibility, creativity and cost-competitiveness in our supply base.
"The more inclusive and diverse we are in our procurement operations, the greater our chances of tapping into excellent niche supply sources."
The scheme is the first project to come out of the UK Women's Enterprise Task Force, which was established to increase in the quantity and size of women-led enterprises over the next three years.
