The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) has applied for a review and approval for its electricity procurement processes, it emerged this week.
The Ontario Energy Board announced yesterday it had received the proposal from the OPA, which also submitted its plan for an integrated power system.
Under terms of the country's Electricity Act 1998, it is the OPA's responsibility for creating a plan of this sort and for developing the procurement processes necessary for the management of electricity in compliance with the plan.
Details of the integrated power plan include the aim to double the amount of renewable energy by 2025, replace or refurbish the province's nuclear baseload ability and gradually phase out the use of coal-fired energy production by 2014.
"The plan must be founded on prudence - cost-effectiveness and feasibility of options," said Amir Shalaby, vice president of power system planning at OPA. "It must also have flexibility - the ability to respond and adapt to what actually happens and changes in our assessment of the future."
