NHS Supply Chain has begun dispatching ultrasound scanners around the UK, it has been reported.
It is the first nationwide online procurement scheme involving the equipment, according to Healthcare Equipment and Supplies.
The programme has seen the 93 NHS trusts taking part save around £6.3 million.
And Roger West, NHS Supply Chain's procurement director, acknowledged the big savings that the procurement has delivered, as well as how it has encouraged lower tender prices.
"We believe that the NHS could save millions more if it was to place its contracts with NHS Supply Chain and get the best price for high quality products that meet today's patient care needs," he said.
Meanwhile, NHS procurement partner and contractor CSC has recorded a 57 per cent increase in profits over the fourth quarter.
The results come late due to administrative difficulties, which cost the company £56.5 million in charges.
