A standard Microsoft Windows desktop procurement system may be employed across all of the agencies under the umbrella of the Office and Management and Budget (OMB) and the Defense Department (DD), it has been reported.
A top OMB official has recommended to the DD that all IT contracts are consistent in hardware and software configuration - causing no harm to the current system, according to Government Computer News.
The Air Force has also become involved, insisting that it be included on all IT projects in the future, it added.
"Moving to a standard desktop is about governance and policy, not technology. Our vision is real-time desktop management," said Ken Heitkamp, associate director for lifecycle management and director of the Air Force's IT commodity council.
In the UK, defence minister Lord Drayson has announced that a major reform of the procurement system used by the military is on the way.
