A bill drafted to prevent the type of procurement errors that occurred in the wake of Hurricane Katrina being repeated was approved by a House of Representatives committee without dissent on Tuesday.
The bill aims to prevent contracting abuses by increasing oversight and limiting the length of non-competitive contracts.
Representative Henry Waxman introduced the bill in the wake of what he described as a "pattern of reckless spending, poor planning, and ineffective oversight by contract officials that has resulted in the waste of hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars".
The House armed services committee chairman, Representative Ike Skelton, saw several changes to the bill approved by the committee this week.
Representative Skelton said the bill encourages the use of fixed-price procurement contracts and aims to minimise the use of non-competitive contracts.
A House floor vote on the bill is scheduled for this Thursday, March 15th.
