A new initiative headed by local government could see savings being made in the procurement of products and services of around £4.9 billion, it has emerged.
The scheme, which is thought to be worth an estimated £185 million, will improve efficiency of procurement as well as the accountability of local government to taxpayers.
It is reported that the funding will go to Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnerships to target areas where services can be improved and made more cost-efficient over a three-year period.
Announcing the move, local government minister John Healey said that council tax payers and businesses were right to expect improvement in services and efficiency and added that the new project should drive down costs.
"Today's announcement will give councils the support they need to drive up standards in local services and make annual three per cent savings that could be used to help keep council tax down," he said.
Earlier this month, Mr Healey announced that councils would be awarded for improving employment levels and opportunities in their areas.
