Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has committed to a new blood tracking solution for transfusions that helps to provide accountability.
The trust has become the latest NHS body to commit to the solution, which will cover all transfusions performed by the trust, serving 500,000 people across Gloucestershire and neighbouring counties.
Awarded following an open tender, the contract for the blood tracking solution was awarded based on functionality and quality, with the first phase of the project going live at the haematology and oncology units serving both Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
Interfacing with existing systems, the blood tracking solution enables NHS Trust staff to track units of blood, platelets and plasma from the blood bank, with pin numbers and user names required to release stock for clinical use.
The Msoft blood tracking solution has also been implemented by North Mersey Health Informatics Service and Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust.
A European Union statute made it obligatory for hospitals to ensure that the right blood is given to the right patient at the right time in November 2005, with vein-to-vein traceability needed throughout the system.
