Indian union minister of state for food processing industries, Mr Subodh Kant Sahai, has called for the inclusion of commission agents in the supply chain for organised retail.
He explained that commission agents risked facing unemployment if organised retail chains continued to prefer sourcing their goods directly from producers.
"I have asked the retail sector to make commission agents part of their supply chain, so that they do not get unemployed," the union minister told reporters at the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management.
"It is unfortunate that retail outlets are being made a political debate. Retail outlets are going to generate huge demand."
Commenting on the potential of the food processing sector in the country, he said that there was no limit in sight, with only six per cent of agricultural produce currently being processed, compared to 70 to 80 per cent in most other countries.
