A regional MP from the Liberal Democrat party has called for increased procurement for British food manufacturers and farmers.
In an interview for BBC Radio 4's Farming Today show, Roger Williams accused the government of not doing enough to promote public procurement in the British food industry.
Mr Williams said that the government had "made a commitment" to review public procurement policies and make sure that British food manufacturers and producers were getting either "a good chance or an equal chance of supplying
public bodies".
His comments followed reports that NHS patients in the UK are most likely to be fed lamb that has not been reared in the UK, but imported from other countries.
"This isn't just a criticism of the government, this is a wake-up call for the farming community, to say there is a market there for your product," he concluded.
Last week an article for Supply Chain Standard noted that supply chain management within the healthcare industry was becoming a complex area.
