Companies involved in the procurement process for Leeds City Council are being urged to sign a charter requiring them to provide community benefits.
The council is asking suppliers to commit to the Charter for Procuring Community benefits, which is part of the local government's scheme to increase corporate social responsibility.
As part of the charter, any participating business that supplies services or products to the council must then provide fundraising activities, mentoring or volunteering opportunities for consumers in the area.
"[As] a major purchaser of goods and services, we want to lead the way in ensuring that our own practices contribute to narrowing the gap," said Paul Rogerson, chief executive of Leeds City Council.
Some £300,000 in European funding was recently awarded to the city via the Learning and Skills Council and Yorkshire Forward.
