Milk procurement in India has seen a significant rise with buyers in the Punjab region paying the highest price, it has emerged.
According to Indian newspaper the Tribune, buyers in Punjab are paying the highest average price for their milk and the overall procurement of milk by Milkfed has increased in the stste by around 30 per cent.
Co-operation minister, Kanwaljit Singh, told the newspaper that the government intends to raise the national targets for milk procurement and it is reported that a workshop to encourage this has been arranged.
"We are keen that farmers should come out of the traditional cropping pattern and usher into a new era
the union government kept Punjab farmers trapped in producing wheat and paddy and also did not give them remunerative prices of food grains over the years," he commented.
It is noted that the workshop was attended by experts from the National Dairy Development Board as well as senior officers of the co-operative department.
Earlier this month, the Hindu reported that planned price rises for milk procurement had met with mixed reactions from farmers and buyers.
