India's defence ministry has issued the Request for Proposal for the procurement of combat aircraft this week.
The contract - to provide 126 medium multi-role aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF) - was issued in a 211-page document to six vendors, including Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
In June of this year, the country's defence minister Shri A K Antony detailed three principles which should guide the procurement and selection.
Firstly, the contract should ensure all of the IAF's operational and technical needs are met, while the selection process itself needs to be "competitive, fair and transparent" to realise best value for money.
In addition, the proposal is intended to encourage defence industries in India to expand and develop internationally.
According to the ministry, the IAF currently uses vintage Russian jets but the stock needs replacing quickly.
