The Irish Software Association (ISA) has called for changes to be made to ensure small and medium-sized business can compete for procurement contracts, it has been reported.
According to ISA chairman Pat Brazel, companies in the country have "proven globally" that they can provide cost-effective and innovative solutions, business and finance website Finfacts Ireland has stated.
In order to implement change within the sector, the official called for less prescriptive tenders and for the unbundling of contracts - making them smaller and more manageable for businesses.
"We are lucky to have a transparent public procurement system," he said.
"However, relatively minor improvements would significantly enhance the ability of smaller companies to compete."
The ISA has represented the interests of the industry since 1978.
Its three main areas for development this year are the creation of scale between product and service firms, assisting companies in planning funding strategy and having a clear voice to the government.
