Significant savings could be made if the housing industry focussed on improving procurement processes, according to a new report.
The Press Association said today that a joint report by the Audit Commission and the Housing Corporation has suggested that housing associations could double their savings by redressing the way maintenance are acquired.
It was noted that around a third of savings made by housing associations during the 2006/2007 period were made as a result of outsourcing and that by increasing the number of procurement initiatives savings of around £100 per home could be made annually.
Commenting on the report, chief executive of the Audit Commission Steve Bundred said that procurement was a "powerful tool" that when used appropriately could secure greater value for money for the sector.
"While some housing associations are using procurement as part of their efforts to drive up standards for residents and save money, others are missing out," he said.
Last month the commission said that council housing bosses were not offering "a strong culture of customer care," according to Bucks Free Press.
