Procurement and supply chain efficiency within the healthcare industry is rapidly becoming an area of complexity, one expert has suggested.
In an article for Supply Chain Standard, John Lamb has noted that in its attempts to strike the right "politically acceptable balance between cost saving and quality of care" the industry faces a number of tough challenges.
He noted that the importance of hospital supply chains sets healthcare procurement apart from many other sectors and added that where inefficiencies "consume resources that could be used to boost hospital budgets" there are a number of things to consider.
"Healthcare supply chains are becoming increasingly complex. Major hospitals are pooling their resources, specialising in particular areas of healthcare and introducing new services," he states.
Mr Lamb goes on to state that improved quality assurance, investment in eprocurement systems and other areas of modernisation were central to improving supply chains in the healthcare industry but that privatisation may not be the best way forward.
This week the government came under fire from one Liberal Democrat MP after it was reported that NHS patients were more likely to be eating imported lamb than British reared meat.
