A recent conference held in Turkey saw the signing of an agreement designed to provide an e-procurement portal for a network of 100 city governments across five continents.

A report from AME info said that the deal had been concluded and announced at the annual 'Glocalization' event, an international get-together aimed at improving inter-city relations and creating a more socio-economically equal world.

One of the major themes of this years gathering was the Global eCities Network, an initiative designed to help cities automate government practices using information and communication technology.

As a constituent of this policy, an agreement to implement an online eCities website, which would provide e-procurement solutions to network members, was reached. Glocal members will as a result be able to interact with all regional trading partners and vendors and procurement processes will now both be online in developing and developed cities.

It is expected that the use of e-procurement practices in developing cities will bring budgetary savings, which can then be re-invested into front line services. It will also allow local in developing countries access to the global marketplace.

Omar Hijazi, chief executive of Tajeri, the company that will install the e-procurement portal, told AME info: "E-commerce is a demonstrated catalyst for growth and development across the region. It is already transforming the ways that governments and the private sector conduct business

"The Glocal eCities marketplace program can influence and impact three significant areas of development in a country -- promoting good governance through transparency and efficiency; creating economic growth and encouraging cross-border trade; and lastly and most importantly, making information technology affordable and accessible to organizations of all sizes."
