Purchasing is a key element of any business, but it has been suggested that eprocurement is particularly important in the aviation sector.
A new article in the July issue of Overhaul & Maintenance, as published on the Aviation Week website, claims that eprocurement has become "hugely significant" in this industry.
Eprocurement allows firms to scan global markets quickly, according to the report, with the result that their demands can be met with shorter lead-in times than was the case previously.
Aviation firms such as GKN Aerospace have reaped the benefits of eprocurement and its senior vice president of supply chain management, Rob Soen, told Overhaul & Maintenance the company's procurement processes have changed significantly recently.
"We've spent time, money and resource on developing our critical supplier base for the future," he said, adding that suppliers have been brought in line with GKN's business needs.
"Indeed, some of our suppliers manage 'line-side' stocks, so we don't have to raise purchase orders for certain things now," Mr Soen added, explaining that it now uses a "direct line feed" arrangement for procurement.
In related news, members of the education community also praised eprocurement for the potential benefits it offers.
Boston's Cambridge College said since adopting an eprocurement system, a "dramatic" improvement was noted and that it is expected to bring time and cost savings.
