The benefits of e-procurement have been championed by authorities in DeKalb County, Georgia, it has been reported.
According to FSW.com, employees switched to e-procurement from a paper-based purchasing system in 2004 in order to reduce labour time and costs.
With the use of Oracle's E-Business Suite of financial and procurement applications, the body was able to mesh purchasing and accounts systems and fully expects the $8 million (£4.05 million) system to have paid for itself by June 2007.
The county also claimed to be receiving orders faster, in addition to the advances in speed it has made in processing them - causing an expert to spout the benefits of e-procurement.
"These days, the applications that are generally available from providers actually do what they say they will do and deliver compelling results," said Andrew Bartolini, research director of global supply management research at the Aberdeen Group.
Last week, Coupa Software made its eProcurement Express software available for free online.
