Businesses around the world ought to be preparing the supply chain for the likely introduction of carbon labelling on all manner of consumer goods, it has been claimed.

A team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has suggested in its latest newsletter that manufacturers and suppliers will soon be obliged to inform their customers about the environmental impact of bringing their products to market.

Efforts are being made to find the most effective way of collecting specified information on carbon emissions in relation to a particular product, but companies need to start adapting to the growing trend of environmental responsibility, according to the MIT experts.

"The supply chain is an integral part of these labelling systems, because it is here where much of the basic information carried on labels is gleaned," said researchers Edgar E Blanco and Anthony J Craig.

"Supply chain leaders need to keep abreast of this work and understand the intricacies of carbon labelling before their products come under the microscope."

In the UK recently, the Walkers Crisps company announced its intention to detail the weight of the carbon emissions that result from the production and delivery of each of its bags of crisps.
