The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has called on the government to "get procurement right" following the publication of the first tranche of its procurement capability reviews.
Dr Neil Bentley, the CBI's director of public services, confirmed the importance of good procurement, indicating that it was essential for companies so that they could ensure they were being treated "fairly".
He added that effective and efficient procurement was crucial for taxpayers so that they knew their money was being spent efficiently.
Commenting on the reviews' findings, he stated that the figures showed good progress in several areas but that some government departments still had a long way to go.
However, Dr Bentley confirmed: "The reviews themselves were a big step forward - part of a necessary shift by government towards recognising the importance of departments using the same commercial skills as business."
The procurement capability reviews are central to the government's aim of ensuring that procurement drives public service improvements.
