Many businesses are following the trend of highly streamlined outsourced supply chains in a bid to make cost savings, but that practice holds potential dangers as well as gains.
Business intelligence (BI) specialist Paul Hoy has warned that the over-streamlining of suppliers can leave companies vulnerable because "one disaster can bring business to a halt".
Mr Hoy, director of manufacturing solutions at BI software providers Cognos, has also asserted that the companies' knowledge of the secondary and tertiary vendors in their supply chain is often lacking. This can make it much more difficult to identify potential problems.
Mr Hoy has identified a number of ways to guard against these problems including business event management and effective reporting on key supply chain areas.
He also extols the benefits of business intelligence as a means of bringing together different procurement systems.
"Business intelligence provides a complete view of supply chain indicators across all transaction systems.
"It helps companies plan and respond effectively to keep the business on track no matter what happens down the line, a critical ability in the high-risk world of supply chain dynamics," he said.
