A Boeing boss has stated that some of its main and smaller suppliers for the ambitious new 787 jetliner have fallen short of expectations.
Boeing has assumed design responsibilities for some aspects of the plane in order to ensure the highest standards, as some suppliers contracted out to produce sections of the jets failed to measure up, the Associated Press reports.
Mike Bair, former head of the 787 program, told the Snohomish County Economic Development Council that "a bunch of mistakes" were made and welcomed his replacement Pat Shanahan, who will see the project through to completion.
Delivery of the 787 has been delayed by Boeing for at least six months because of supply chain problems and the first jets are expected to be released in late 2008.
The 787 is made from lightweight, sturdy plastics to make it cheaper to operate, more fuel efficient and allow for improvements more easily.
