The EU believes there is still work to be done to improve cross-border competition in public procurement, it has been reported.
According to the European parliament, twenty member states have so far committed to employing new public procurement directives.
But Arlene McCarthy, rapporteur and procurement official for Labour North West UK, has stated that preference between countries could scupper any proposed ideas.
"Favouritism for national champions and other failures to award contracts on a competitive basis are a continued threat," she said.
Ms McCarthy added that the commission should look to encourage EU countries to tackle any problems in implementation and transposition the sector may face.
The European parliament was established as the Common Assembly in 1952.
It contains 22 committees and eight political groups which usually convene in Brussels and Strasbourg, while the secretariat is in Luxembourg and Brussels.
Hans-Gert Pottering is the current president.
