The African Development Bank (AfDB) has signed a deal with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) that aims to provide all COMESA's member state procurement agencies with e-procurement systems.
The deal is worth $8.4 million and is designed to enhance the Public Procurement Reform project It will allow COMESA to conform to directives issued in 2003 and will mean that the needs of both member states and international practice will be met.
COMESA successfully oversaw the implementation of the Public Procurement Reform Project from 2002 to 2005. This scheme was also funded by the AfDB and it allowed COMESACA to start the ball rolling for procurement practice modernisation and good governance procedures in member states.
COMESCA aims to establish compatible e-procurement systems throughout the region. So far their projects have led to increased trade and greater company profits throughout the region.
Sindiso Ngwenya, secretary general, said: "The enhancement of Public Procurement Reform will greatly accelerate good governance and transparency in COMESCA member states.
"The optimum use of those resources can only be attained through efficient management in the procurement process."
