Enhanced management of transport options by relief agencies could save them millions of pounds every year, according to one industry body.
The Fleet Forum has said that the procurement and management systems in place for the hundreds of 4X4s and trucks used in relief operations across the globe could much improve the service they provide.
In fact, the forum states that improved acquisition, management and later disposal of such equipment could save up to 17 per cent of a $1 billion excha annual outlay.
Rob McConnell, coordinator of the forum, told IRIN News, the news service for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, that while other areas of their operations are often tightly managed, aid agencies habitually fail to take a corporate approach to such procurement issues.
The Paris Declaration signed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, undertaken in 2005 and ongoing in its remits, is a current global effort to reform the management and delivery of aid.
