As the issue of responsible procurement becomes more important, a series of recommendations has been produced for companies keen to provide a high level of service and meet the environmental concerns of big companies.
In a report entitled Supply chains and the climate: Principles of responsible procurement, business journalist Jeanette Wiemers claims that companies should identify the main areas of their operations causing environmental impact before they select sustainable suppliers.
Writing for Climate Change Corp, Ms Wiemers explains that a number of global companies are taking steps to create strong climate change policies, with BT sending questionnaires to suppliers which are then used to rate them based on their energy-efficiency and BSkyB reviewing suppliers' sourcing and environmental performance.
Research and marketing manger for sustainable procurement advisor Olive Consulting, Jennifer Welch, claims that businesses working effectively with suppliers for common green aims can both achieve improved efficiency and profits, while also reducing their carbon footprint and saving energy.
Donna Young, BT Group head of climate change, explained: "We want to help our current suppliers reduce their carbon footprints and, as such, reduce the carbon footprints of the products and services they supply to us."
Government-funded agencies such as the Carbon Trust, ECA and Envirowise are helping businesses and vendors to assess the environmental impact of their operations. Created in December 2001 by the multilateral development banks (MDBs), United Nations (UN) organisations, and a number of non governmental organisations, the Interagency Sustainable Procurement Group is aimed at helping organisations to share experiences on sustainable procurement, exchange information, conduct research and studies, and develop joint procurement documents.
